The Great Debate

To G or not to G? That is the question.

I’ve decided to ditch Erich’s landfill cloggers and live a little greener. That’s right friends, the Bohns are going cloth. I used to think cloth diapers would be a lot of work but many friends have convinced me otherwise. No more pins and plastic covers, diapers of the old days are Pintos compared to what’s out there now. And although I’d really like to be creative and resourceful like some people I know, I’m just not that dedicated. So I’m ready with my credit card, but there are options galore and I simply can’t decide between the Mercedes and the BMW.

I’ve narrowed it down to two brands:

gdiapers & bumGenius

.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages; however, I won’t bore anyone with the details. Frankly I don’t feel like typing it all out. But it’s the funniest thing; I’m really excited to be more “hands on” with my child’s puddles and squirts (that’s what we call poo & pee in our house). It will feel good to help the environment in my own little way. (Man, I’m such a liberal.)

So there I was tonight, researching my new obsession with my little angel cuddled in my lap, playing with his own latest obsession, his hands. I was reading up on the Stacinator, a diaper cover that’s supposedly a “great way to stop day and nighttime diaper leaks,” when Erich suddenly became squirmy. I lifted him up to find brown leakage all over us and his blanket. Oh, the irony just kills me. That Stacinator thing sounds pretty fabulous.

let me know how it goes...i've been considering cloth as well. the cost of diapers and the guilt of waste has been bothering me...

so they are modified cloth-only partly disposable. cool! and they are surprisingly cute! any idea on the cost of the bumgenius? maybe i'm special, but i didn't see it-looks like you can't order online? definitely not cheap, but environmentally priceless!

I really live in a different world than you guys. I have no desire whatsoever to go cloth. More power to you...but I say YIKES!

And I live among the hippies...

liz, if you're really interested my friend uses bumgenius and just loves them. They are about $17 a piece. The best part about them is they have adjustable snaps so they fit up to 35 lbs or so. I'll send you the details through Ali. Thanks, Ali :)

i love the idea of gdiapers but u dont save money, so thats out. the guy who made gdiapers actually emailed me because i wrote on my blog about how high they were... and he told me they are trying really hard right now to lower the cost.

I use bum genius diapers.

I'm definitely a leftie but I don't know that I could ever go cloth. I'm having a hard time just thinking about putting those things in the washer. Do you just put them in with regular clothes? I think I'm with Ali on this one but then again if Chris and I come to D.C. you'll have plenty of time and experience to persuade (or dissuade) me:)

I don't think I'd ever put cloth diapers in with normal clothes. I'd wash them separately but you're supposed to run an extra cycle. On top of drying you ending wasting extra energy. How much environment/work/money are you really saving? I want to go cloth for a reason not just a fad, dammit! Anyway, I'd love to see a study on this. And Drea, you're totally right. I love the gdiaper concept but I hate the idea of being dependent on the flushables. thats at least another $50 a month! Disposables are cheaper... blah.

and Becca I want you to move here so badly! I hope you're really considering it, we'd have a blast!!

Hi there I am the CEO of gDiapers. We have a 3 day earth sale starting today so it is 15% cheaper!
If you are nervy about flushing you can simply toss them - as they are plastic free, they degrade far faster than disposables - about 55 days in soil burial trials.

At the end of the day, diaper choice is really personal, so choose a system that suits you!

Cheers

Way to go Missy! I think you are fabulous! Making the planet happy is a good thing.

I think the GDiapers are a great idea. You get little poo on your hands since you don't really have to "scrub" them out. I've heard great things about them. The Bumgenius sounds good too. It's an "All-in-one" correct?

Cloth diapering is going really well for us. Maybe it's because we are naive and don't realize how absolutely easy disposables are. We've worked out most of the leakage kinks, so if you've got questions let me know~

I'd considered those options as well! For the time being- while I'm still changing midnight and 3am diapers, I think I'll stick with the disposables. Maybe when he decides to sleep through the night I'll get brave and do the cloth thing. Keep us posted! ;)

Wow, see this is why I am not married and don't have kids. More power to ya but yeah wow - good luck with that Hoochie. Huggies, Luvs, Pampers pretty sure that is the way I will go some day... but they are cute and not nearly as scary as the old school soak and swirl in the toilet kind I think of when I hear cloth diaper.

I do remember the "PINTO" days. Cloth diapers, pins, rubber pants, and diaper pails!
