Binkie Boot Camp

Much to my chagrin, today marks the beginning of the end of binky use in our house. No binkies will ever be allowed in Erich's mouth again. My once beloved and trusted soother and scream stopper has slowly been doing it's dirty work on my son. I felt so betrayed by my little assistants when the pediatrician told me today that they have given E a pretty significant overbite. Ah!! Stupid me - of all people, as someone who wore braces for 3 years to repair the damage of my own finger-sucking, I should have known better. But he is so young and it's something that I never really considered, especially since he really only uses them at night (and occasionally as the previously mentioned screecher plug).

So that's it: I say they're OUT! Wish me luck, though, because this could be a looong couple of nights. And because I'm going to try to (gently) nudge Erich's teeth back every chance I get. (He'll thank me in 12 years when he doesn't have to wear head gear to school and be teased by his siblings.)

Don't despair; he may have had that overbite even without the binkie (and he may have turned to his thumb, like Sophie and Sam, and try taking that away . . .). We just finished our first round of orthodontics--it starts early (age 8!) and mostly manages to avoid headgear (Benjamin has a giant hinge thingy INSIDE his mouth), which is good news for Erich come middle school.

Good luck! Our binkie detox wasn't really that bad. Gretta was sad about it but the detox didn't take long. 2 or 3 days.

Sad days for little e. Eli has recently started rejecting the binkie, moving on to sucking his middle and ring finger instead. If it's not one battle, it's another. Good Luck.

Good Luck with that! Scout doesn't take a binky but she does suck her thumb. So just be glad you can throw them away. You can't throw away a thumb.

when ethan rejected binkies and the boob at around 8 months I thought I was in or it. Luckily he never started on his thumb, but it sure was a pain to not have any kind of pacifier. But now that he's at that age when we'd be taking it away, I'm pretty glad he gave it up himself... Like Becca said, if it's not one thing, it's another. FUN TIMES.

I am so sorry about the pacifier. I am waiting for the day to take them away from Aaron. I too had to wear braces, but mine was for 4 years and my teeth are still bad. Anyways, I'll pray for you!

Oh I hope it is going smoothly for you. I was so afraid of taking Emery's paci's away because she was a full blown addict. But it ended up not being so bad and she was over if after a couple days.

I also had a binkie...and a cross-bite...and braces...and a head-gear. Yikes. I hope Baby K has a better shot at straight teeth.
